Key learning points

  1. The French 'g' has 2 sounds: soft before e, i and y and hard before other letters.
  2. With a definite article, 'l'allemand' is a noun, without an article it is an adjective.
  3. With capital letter, 'Allemand' is a noun meaning a person from Germany, as with 'anglais' and other languages.
  4. We use the present tense of 'aller' followed by an infinitive to express future plans.
  5. We use 'nous allons' and 'vous allez' + infinitive to express what we and you (plural) are going to do.

Keywords

  • [j/soft g] - sound-symbol correspondence (SSC) like the [j] sound in 'jour' or the [soft g] sound in 'génial'

  • Nous allons - French verb meaning 'we go' or 'we are going'

  • Vous allez - French verb meaning 'you (plural) go' or 'you (plural) are going'

Common misconception

The word German is always 'allemand' with a lower case 'a' in French.

With a capital letter, Allemand is a noun meaning a person from Germany. With a lower case letter it is an adjective describing someone or something that comes from Germany and also a noun meaning the German language.
