Key learning points

  1. [s] is pronounced as in 'maison'.
  2. A double 's' between vowels is always soft but a single 's' between vowels is always a hard 's' [s] and sounds like 'z'.
  3. Movement verbs such as 'entrer', 'tomber' and 'monter' use 'être' in the perfect tense before the past participle.
  4. Past participles used with être must agree in gender + number with the subject of the verb. Add 's' for plural subjects.
  5. How (often) adverbs usually go after the first verb but longer -ment adverbs usually go at the end or even the start.

Keywords

  • [s] - pronounced as in 'maison'

  • Past participle agreement - when the ending of a past participle matches the subject of the verb in gender and number

Common misconception

'S' always sounds the same in French.

The 's' at the beginning of words and double 's' is a soft sound but 's' between two consonants is [s], pronounced as in 'maison'.
