In this unit, pupils deepen their knowledge of the perfect tense in a range of contexts including historical events, celebrations in other countries, public services and a Eurovision song text. Pupils apply their knowledge in extended reading and listening, using reference resources, creative writing and in transactional dialogues. Pupils anchor the present tense in talking about their free time activities, using the relative pronoun 'qui'.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils know how to form past participles of regular -er verbs.
- Pupils know the past participles of verbs like 'prendre', and of irregular verbs faire, dire, boire and avoir.
- Pupils know how to form the perfect tense with 'avoir' as the auxiliary verb.
- Pupils know how to form questions using intonation and est-ce que, with and without question words.
- Pupils know how to negate perfect tense sentences using ne...pas.
- Pupils can translate the perfect tense using the simple past and the present perfect in English.
- Pupils know to use 'vous' instead of 'tu' for 'you' and 'nous' instead of 'on' for 'we' in formal situations.
- Pupils can use verbs like 'entendre' and verbs like 'écrire' in the present tense.

Pupils deepen their knowledge of the perfect tense, question forms and negation. '-er verbs taking être in the perfect and the negative 'ne...jamais' are introduced . Pupils apply changes in register (tu vs vous, on vs nous), use emphatic pronouns 'moi' and 'toi' and the relative pronoun 'qui'.
