Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

Key learning points

  1. [en/an] is pronounced as in 'enfant'.
  2. [ain/in] is pronounced as in 'train'.
  3. Numbers 17-69 are made up of a combination of numbers. Add 'et' before 'un' and a hyphen between other numbers.
  4. To ask what time it is in French, say 'Quelle heure est-il ?' To say at what time something happens, we use 'à'
  5. To tell the time, use impersonal verb 'il est' + number + heure(s) + minutes. The 24-hour clock is used more in French.

Keywords

  • [en/an] - pronounced as in 'enfant'

  • [ain/in] - pronounced as in 'train'

Common misconception

Knowing the lower numbers is enough to be able to tell the time in French.

As French uses 24-hour clock more than English and gives the minutes after the hour, you need to know numbers 1-59 well.

Teacher tip

Teachers might want to make use of white boards to improve fluency in understanding French numbers and times, particularly the 24-hour clock. Teachers might expand upon the quick check activities with numbers of their own choosing.
