Key learning points

  1. If a word ends with an SFC, the consonant is pronounced before a word beginning with [h], this is called liaison.
  2. Words like 'le', 'je', 'ne' and 'que' replace their final letter with an apostrophe before a word beginning with [h].
  3. This is called elision, which we have seen before, e.g. 'j'ai' and 'c'est'.
  4. The 'nous' form of verbs like 'choisir' ends in -issons, the 'vous' form ends in -issez.
  5. The 'ils, elles' form of verbs like 'choisir' ends in -issent.

Keywords

  • [h] - sound symbol correspondence (SSC) like the [h] in 'heure' which means 'hour'

  • Liaison - pronouncing a usually silent final consonant (SFC) because a word starting with a vowel follows

  • Elision - when a vowel sound is dropped and two words combined with an apostrophe to make speech smoother e.g. j'aime.

Common misconception

All I need to know about [h] in French is that it is silent.

The rules of liaison and elision apply to the French silent [h]. Before a word starting with [h], if a word ends with an SFC, the consonant is pronounced (liaison) and words like 'le' and 'que' replace their final letter with an apostrophe (elision).

Elision may be a new grammatical term for some pupils however, they will have seen it many times before. For example with verbs such as avoir (j'ai) and être (c'est) so it is a good idea to give them lots of these kind of examples.
