Key learning points

  1. [-ien] is pronounced as in 'bien'.
  2. Negative subject pronouns act as the subject of a sentence and carry a negative meaning.
  3. 'Personne ne' and 'rien ne' are always followed by a verb in the il/elle/on form.
  4. Use a range of strategies to prepare for read aloud tasks like mental rehearsal and noticing cognates or tricky sounds.

Keywords

  • Negative subject pronoun - negates the verb as the subject of a sentence, usually with ‘ne’

  • Personne ne - nobody

  • Rien ne - nothing

Common misconception

You need to include 'pas' when using a negative subject pronoun.

The whole negative meaning is contained in the negative subject pronoun (rien or personne) with 'ne' before the following verb. An additional negative element is not necessary e.g. Personne ne mange sainement - nobody eats healthily.
