Key learning points
- We can work out the meaning of new words if we recognise part of the word from a related word.
- Being able to apply word patterns, such as creating nouns from verb stems, significantly expands our vocabulary
- Extend answers by justifying opinions and using a variety of adjectives, adverbs, pronouns and intensifiers.
Keywords
Verb stem - part of the verb that appears in all forms
Agent noun - a noun describing the person or object doing the action of a verb
Common misconception
All agent nouns in French end in -eur, e.g. 'joueur'.
Many French agent nouns have the '-ateur' ending, for example 'consommateur', which means 'consumer'. This is because these agent nouns are linked to the original Latin forms that French has maintained today.
