Le conseil de la vie scolaire : extended speaking

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can contribute to a democratic process in a school context using a range of topic-specific vocabulary to support my ideas.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. We can work out the meaning of new words if we recognise part of the word from a related word.
      2. Being able to apply word patterns, such as creating nouns from verb stems, significantly expands our vocabulary
      3. Extend answers by justifying opinions and using a variety of adjectives, adverbs, pronouns and intensifiers.

      Keywords

      • Verb stem - part of the verb that appears in all forms

      • Agent noun - a noun describing the person or object doing the action of a verb

      Common misconception

All agent nouns in French end in -eur, e.g. 'joueur'.

Many French agent nouns have the '-ateur' ending, for example 'consommateur', which means 'consumer'. This is because these agent nouns are linked to the original Latin forms that French has maintained today.

      Teacher tip

For task B1, encourage students not to read from a script, but to make bullet point notes to remind them of what they plan to say. Students should also be encouraged to record their work, listen back, and then have another go, in order to improve performance.

      Equipment

A mini whiteboard and pen, together with pen and paper for making notes, would be useful, if available.
