Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Present participle adjectives can usefully be combined with other adjectives to give more information about nouns.
      2. Comparative and superlative adjectives can be used to enhance opinions and descriptions.
      3. It is important to communicate accurately but also to include varied and complex language.
      4. When developing a personal response it is helpful to use reference materials to look up new vocabulary.

      Keywords

      • Present participle - verb form ending in -ant in French; the structure en + present participle translates into English as while or by + -ing

      • Comparative - a form of adjective or adverb used to compare people, things or ideas

      • Superlative - a form of adjective or adverb used to express the highest degree of a quality e.g. the tallest, the most interesting

      Common misconception

The superlative in French always goes before the noun it describes, like in English.

Superlatives may go before or after the noun they describe. The rule that applies is BRAGS - if an adjective goes before the noun according to the BRAGS rule, its superlative form will also go before the noun.

      Teacher tip

Task B1 is a writing activity that requires research into sportspeople. If time does not allow for this, teachers may wish to provide background on the sportswomen in the slides ready for students to use. Students needing more support can be asked to follow the example text closely.

      Equipment

A bilingual dictionary or access to a dictionary website is needed. A mini whiteboard and pen, together with pen and paper for making notes, would also be useful, if available.
