Key learning points

  1. Using the imperative in conversation enables the speaker to give instructions and advice, or to make suggestions.
  2. In a role-play it's important to work out whether you will be addressed as ‘vous’ (formal) or ‘tu’ (informal).
  3. You need to use the correct 'please': 's'il vous plait' in a formal setting, and 's'il te plait' for a friend.

Keywords

  • Imperative - a mood used to tell somebody to do something or give instructions or commands

  • Role-play - a task with a situation and prompts to ask and answer questions, simulating a conversation

Common misconception

When making suggestions, 'let's' needs to be said in French as a separate idea.

In French, use the imperative in the 'nous' form to create the phrase 'let's + verb', e.g. 'allons ...' means 'let's go ...'.

Task B1 has two parts to allow students to practise role-play scenarios in pairs. The first is informal, the second in a formal setting. Teachers can use either or both as appropriate. However, the ability to understand formal register in spoken language is important for both specifications.
