Key learning points

  1. Listening and reading texts can be exploited to enrich our topic-specific vocabulary.
  2. France and other Francophone countries are religiously diverse.
  3. Cognates may look very similar to English but sound quite different so attention must be paid to pronunciation.
  4. Time adverbials and verb forms can be used to distinguish between past, present and future actions and events.

Keywords

  • Cognate - words with the same meaning and same or similar spelling in English and French

Common misconception

Cognates are pronounced the same way in French as they are in English.

Cognates are often pronounced very differently in French. Students should not overlook the importance of practising pronunciation of cognates in order to better respond to listening stimuli as well as to develop a more authentic pronunciation.
