Key learning points

  1. The verb spellings of regular reflexive verbs are the same as regular -er, -ir and -re verbs in the present tense.
  2. Some verbs have a secondary meaning that uses a reflexive pronoun.
  3. Some verbs use reflexive pronouns in French when their English translation doesn't include a reflexive idea.
  4. Sometimes the reflexive pronoun indicates the action is exchanged between two or more subjects acting upon one another.

Keywords

  • Reflexive - describes an action where the subject and object of the verb are the same

  • Reciprocal - describes an action that is two-way or mutual

Common misconception

All verbs using reflexive pronouns are reflexive.

Reciprocal verbs use the reflexive pronouns 'se', 'nous' and 'vous'. They are used to express actions that two or more people perform with, or for, each other, e.g. 'nous nous écrivons souvent' - 'we often write to each other'.
