Key learning points

  1. Use reflexive pronouns (me, te, se ...) before the verb when subject and object of the verb are the same person.
  2. [e] is pronounced as in 'je' and [ou] is pronounced as in 'nous'.
  3. The singular reflexive pronouns are: 'me', 'te', 'se'. They are shortened to m', t' and s' before a silent letter/vowel.
  4. The plural reflexive pronouns are: 'nous', 'vous', 'se'. 'Se' is shortened to s' before a vowel.

Keywords

  • Reflexive pronoun - used to indicate doing something to yourself, words like 'myself' and 'yourself'

Common misconception

Verbs in French that relate to personal actions are only composed the same as in English.

Many verbs relating to daily routine are reflexive in French and require a reflexive pronoun to be used, e.g., 'je me lève'. This reflexive pronoun is not always used in English.

The lesson refers to French hip-hop duo 'BigFlo et Oli'. Teachers might like to play their classes some of their music to enrich student learning. Songs which are suitable for the classroom include: Sur la lune (good for 1-verb future tense) and Plus Tard (good for a range of tenses and vocabulary).
