Key learning points

  1. When the next word begins with a vowel, -s and -t are pronounced, rather than being silent final consonants.
  2. Add a 't' in an inversion question when the verb ends in a vowel and the pronoun begins in a vowel: A-t-il une voiture?
  3. To say what doesn't happen, we use ne...pas around the verb. To say what never happens, use ne...jamais.
  4. Use jouer à to talk about playing sports and jouer de to talk about playing instruments.
  5. À combines with le/les to form au/aux and de combines with le/les to form du/des.

Keywords

  • Liaison - pronouncing a usually silent final consonant because a vowel follows

  • Inversion - when the subject pronoun and the verb switch place to form a question

  • Ne...pas - negative structure, meaning ‘not’

  • Ne...jamais - negative structure, meaning ‘never’

  • Jouer à/de - verb meaning 'to play'

Common misconception

The verb jouer is always followed by the preposition à.

Use jouer à for sports but use jouer de for instruments.
