Key learning points
- Yes/no questions in all tenses are formed by inversion of subject and verb, adding 'est-ce que' or using intonation.
- To ask questions using question words, add a question word before the inverted verb or before 'est-ce que'.
- Being able to ask questions in different tenses, as well as answer them, is key to successful communication.
Keywords
Inversion - when the subject pronoun and the verb switch place to form a question
Common misconception
In French there is a word for 'do/does' in yes/no questions.
The English verb 'do/does' isn't translated directly into French when asking a yes/no question. Instead, use intonation, inversion or 'est-ce que' to ask yes/no questions, e.g. 'Aimes-tu les réseaux sociaux ?' - 'Do you like social media?'.
