      Tropical rainforests: climate and location

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can describe the climate of tropical rainforests and use maps to locate them.

      Key learning points

      1. Places close to the Equator have a hot and wet climate which are perfect conditions for tropical rainforests.
      2. Temperatures in the Tropics temperatures reach over 24° Celsius every day of the year.
      3. Tropical rainforests support a great diversity of plants and animals.
      4. Fruit such as pineapples, bananas and mangoes grow well in tropical regions.

      Keywords

      • Climate - Climate is an average of weather conditions (e.g. rain, sun, wind) in a place taken over a long period of time (usually 30 years or more).

      • Tropical rainforest - Tropical rainforests are areas of dense forest found close to the Equator where it is warm and there are high levels of rainfall.

      • Diversity - Diversity is the variety of human, physical or cultural characteristics in a geographical area.

      Common misconception

Weather and climate are the same.

Weather is the day to day changes in the atmosphere. Climate is the long term weather for an area.

      Teacher tip

Play the students sounds of the rainforest and ask the students how they would feel if they were there.
