Fieldwork: Analysing, concluding and evaluating river data

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can analyse and reflect on my river data to create meaningful conclusions and an evaluation.

      Key learning points

      1. Correlations between variables can be positive or negative and can be of differing strengths.
      2. Interpolation and extrapolation help geographers estimate unknown values in a set of data.
      3. Geographers often consider the ethical aspects of their fieldwork.

      Keywords

      • Interpolation - finding the value of data in a set by examining the data that falls either side of it in sequence

      • Extrapolation - finding the value of data in a set by extending the correlation beyond the known data

      • Ethical considerations - areas of the fieldwork investigation where geographers consider the impact their study may have on people and the environment

      Common misconception

The angle of the line of best fit tells geographers how strong the correlation is between two variables.

The strength of the correlation is decided by how close the plots are to the line of best fit.

      Teacher tip

When students consider environmental ethics in their enquiry they can break these down into smaller areas such as the impacts on air, land and water, or the impacts in the short term as well as the long term.

      What is a river source?

The point where a river meets the sea
Correct answer: The area where a river begins
A small lake in the middle of a river
      A man-made dam

      Q2.
What is the mouth of a river?

The highest point of the river
      A bend in the river
Correct answer: Where the river flows into a larger body of water
      The point where tributaries join

      Q3.
What process involves the wearing away of the riverbed and banks?

      Transportation
      Correct answer: Erosion
      Deposition
      Precipitation

      Q4.
      What is a tributary?

Correct answer: A small river or stream that joins a larger one
      A man-made canal
      A river delta
A deep valley formed by erosion

      Q5.
      What is a meander?

What is the term for material carried by a river?

      Rapids
      Floodplain
      Bedrock
      Correct answer: Sediment

      4 Questions

      Q1.
Match the keywords to their correct meanings.

Correct Answer:Interpolation,Estimating values between known data points

Estimating values between known data points

Correct Answer:Extrapolation,Extending a trend beyond known data

Extending a trend beyond known data

Correct Answer:Ethical considerations,Thinking about people and environment in studies

Thinking about people and environment in studies

      Q2.
Which statement about the line of best fit is correct?

A steeper line always means a stronger correlation
Correct answer: Data points close to the line mean a stronger correlation
The length of the line shows data range
The line's angle shows the sample size

      Q3.
The closer the data points are to the line of best fit, the stronger the between the two variables.

      Correct Answer: correlation

      Q4.
Which graph type is most suitable to show correlation?

      Bar chart
      Pie chart
      Correct answer: Scatter graph
      Line graph
