  1. Eden is a very rural district within the rural county of Cumbria.
  2. Eden has the highest percentage of green space and lowest population density of any district in England.
  3. Eden ranks 186 on the Index of Multiple Deprivation. This masks areas of high deprivation such as barriers to services.
  4. Eden faces four challenges: housing, provision of education and healthcare and decline in primary employment.
  5. The young and elderly are more likely to be affected by challenges due to dependency on parents or the state for income.

Keywords

  • Quality of life - wellbeing of individuals or groups of people measured by criteria other than wealth such as housing, employment and environmental factors

  • Primary employment - jobs involving the extraction of raw materials including farming, fishing and mining

  • Depopulation - reduction of people living in an area

Common misconception

The rank on the Index of Multiple Deprivation tells you everything about the deprivation of an area.

The Index of Multiple Deprivation is calculated by combining seven indicators. The overall rank is therefore an average and can mask significant variation in different aspects of deprivation.
