Inequalities in employment, services, education and health
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can use data to describe deprivation across the Liverpool City Region and identify how this relates to inequalities at a variety of scales.
Key learning points
- Inequalities exist in Liverpool linked to high relative levels of deprivation.
- The Index of Multiple Deprivation measures relative deprivation at local authority and smaller scales.
- The 6 local authorities in the Liverpool City Region are all in the top 60 most deprived in England. Knowsley ranks 2nd.
- Deprivation has a cause and effect link to inequalities in services, health, employment and education.
- High deprivation in Liverpool correlates with poor housing, poor health, unemployment and low educational attainment.
Keywords
Deprivation - low standard of living caused by low income, poor health and low educational attainment, sometimes described as living in poverty
Inequality - wealth or opportunities are not equally shared
Common misconception
Pupils can make sweeping statements about people that live in places.
It is important that data is used as an average and not the characteristics of every individual. The word stereotype is useful to use in this instance.
Teacher tip
The Index of Multiple Deprivation contains a wealth of rich data and adding comparisons to your local area could be a useful comparison. The misconception remains critical in this and the avoidance of stereotyping is paramount.
