      Key learning points

      1. Trying to remember words you have previously learned is essential for building a strong vocabulary.
      2. Listening to understand numbers speeds up mental processing.
      3. Speaking to practise using strong verbs speeds up recall and develops confidence in their use more generally.
      4. Direct object pronouns replace the noun that is the 'receiver' of the action of the verb: 'mich' ('me'), 'dich' ('you').
      5. Using direct object pronouns avoids repeating the noun and makes our communication smoother and more natural.

      Keywords

      • Strong verb - verb which changes its vowel in the verb stem of some of its forms

      • Direct object pronoun - replaces the noun receiving the action of the verb, e.g., 'me', 'you', 'it', 'them'

      • Mich - direct object pronoun 'me'

      • Dich - direct object pronoun 'you'

      Common misconception

There is just one German pronoun for singular informal 'you', as in English, e.g., 'you see me, I see you'.

German has two different pronouns in this scenario: 'du' is subject pronoun 'you', 'dich' is object pronoun 'you', e.g., 'du siehst mich, ich sehe dich'. This is similar to the 'I, me' difference in English, which German also shares: 'ich, mich'.

      Teacher tip

Berlin is a great city so teachers may want to share their own experiences. Some useful websites for students to explore are: 'Berlin mit Tara' (German video) and 'The Berlin Wall' (history) on BBC Bitesize, and the 'Visit Berlin' tourism site for information in German about culture and attractions.
