Key learning points

  1. To say 'you' in German, use 'du' (singular), 'Sie' (formal), ihr (plural) or 'man' (you, one or 'people').
  2. In the present tense, strong German verbs change their vowel in the 'du' and 'er/sie/es/man' forms.
  3. Strong verbs stems with 'e' change to 'i' or 'ie'. Stems with 'a' change to 'ä' or 'au' to 'äu'.

Keywords

  • Strong verb - verb which changes its vowel in the verb stem of some of its forms

  • Ihr - the plural pronoun you - informal

Common misconception

It is only necessary to use 'du' when saying 'you' in German.

In German, there are four words for you: 'du' for friends or family; 'Sie' in formal situations e.g., talking to teachers or strangers; 'ihr' when speaking to several friends or family members; 'man' to talk about people in general.

Establish a class routine of singing Happy Birthday whenever it’s a pupil’s birthday. This creates natural opportunities to revisit language in context, e.g., asking about birthdays, plans to celebrate, comparing ages (e.g., 'Wer ist älter?'), keeping key vocabulary/structures fresh across the year.
