Key learning points

  1. [sch] is pronounced as in 'schreiben', [sp] as in 'spielen' and [st] as in 'stark'.
  2. Conversational words are used in informal situations to add emotion to a statement, e.g., 'Echt?' (really?!).
  3. Modal verbs (e.g., 'können') are used with an infinitive, which is placed at the end of the sentence.
  4. 'Jed-' means 'every'. Use the same ending as the definite article if the noun is the subject: ‘jeder, jede, jedes’.
  5. When a masculine noun is the object in the sentence, use 'jeden'. The feminine and neuter forms remain unchanged.

Keywords

  • [sch] - pronounced as in 'schreiben'

  • [sp] - pronounced as in 'spielen'

  • [st] - pronounced as in 'stark'

  • Conversational words - add emotion (e.g., surprise, annoyance) to a statement

  • Jed- - determiner meaning 'every'

Common misconception

You can use conversational language (an informal register) whenever you want to.

A situation affects the register we use when speaking (i.e., the words we use). You use an informal register with friends, but a formal register with a teacher. Using formal register in formal situations is important in German-speaking communities.
