A charity concert: sentence intonation, object pronouns

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use direct and indirect object pronouns correctly when writing about organising a charity concert.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. When saying sentences, pitch rises on the 1st stressed word, is maintained, then falls on the final stressed syllable.
      2. The rise and fall is similar in German and English, but more marked in German; more noticeable with one-syllable words.
      3. Word substitution tasks strengthen vocabulary and grammar knowledge.
      4. Indirect object pronouns replace the person or thing that the action is done to or for, e.g., 'ich gebe ihm das Geld'.
      5. If a sentence has two objects, the indirect object comes first. If one object is a pronoun, the pronoun comes first.

      Keywords

      • Sentence intonation - how voice pitch changes across a sentence; its audible shape

      • Word substitution - replacing one word with another, changing surrounding words if needed so that the sentence makes sense and is accurate

      • Indirect object/dative pronoun - replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to, when the action is to me, for you, to them

      Common misconception

When we speak, the pitch of our voice rises and falls in the same way in German and English.

The rise and fall of our voice is similar in German and English sentences, but more marked in German and more noticeable with one-syllable words. Note the larger fall when saying 'gut' in German compared to 'good' in English.

      Teacher tip

This lesson builds on word stress by focusing on sentence intonation. With a bit of targeted practice, pupils can give their German pronunciation a real boost - helping them sound clearer, more confident, and more authentically German.
