Eine Online-Welt. Toll, oder? Prepositional verbs, da-compounds

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use a range of prepositional verbs and da-compounds with topic-specific vocabulary to describe the advantages and disadvantages of online life.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Some verbs are followed by prepositions and the accusative case, and some are followed by prepositions and the dative.
      2. We use different prepositions after verbs in English and German, so verb and preposition combinations must be learnt.
      3. The prefix 'da(r)-' can be added to prepositions to refer to something already mentioned. This is called a da-compound.
      4. Some da-compounds have different meanings in common usage as adverbs. Some idiomatic phrases include a da-compound.
      5. A developed response to a question has at least 3 clauses. Include a different tense, subject, or opinion and reason.

      Keywords

      • Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun, connecting it to another word

      • Da-, dar- - prefix added to prepositions to avoid repetition of the noun

      Common misconception

Da-compounds can always be translated literally, with the preposition retaining its usual meaning.

German verb and preposition combinations need to be learnt. We often use different prepositions after verbs in English and in German. Some da-compounds have also taken on slightly different meanings when used as adverbs or in idiomatic phrases.

      Teacher tip

Foundation students for both exam boards should be familiar with 'damit', 'darauf', 'davon' and 'dafür', and Edexcel Foundation students should be familiar with 'dazu' and 'danach'. Other 'da-' compounds are Higher-tier only for both exam boards.
