Key learning points
- Some verbs are followed by prepositions and the accusative case, and some are followed by prepositions and the dative.
- We use different prepositions after verbs in English and German, so verb and preposition combinations must be learnt.
- The prefix 'da(r)-' can be added to prepositions to refer to something already mentioned. This is called a da-compound.
- Some da-compounds have different meanings in common usage as adverbs. Some idiomatic phrases include a da-compound.
- A developed response to a question has at least 3 clauses. Include a different tense, subject, or opinion and reason.

Common misconception
Da-compounds can always be translated literally, with the preposition retaining its usual meaning.
