Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Reading and understanding texts needs attention to vocabulary, structures and a focus on required details.
      2. A distractor is a misleading detail in a text or question option which tests your understanding of the detail of a text.
      3. We can use time phrases and verb tenses to distinguish between past, present and future actions and events.
      4. The BORDER acronym is a useful tool to respond fully and accurately to bullet point writing prompts.
      5. To develop answers, you can add information about another person, add a contrast or add another time frame.

      Keywords

      • Distractor - a misleading detail in a text or question

      • BORDER - extended writing acronym

      Common misconception

When writing in German, accuracy is the most important thing, so it's best to keep sentences short and clear.

When producing written work in German, try to develop and extend your sentences to demonstrate grammatical complexity. This must, of course, be balanced with accuracy, which enables you to communicate your ideas clearly.

      Teacher tip

Actively encourage students to discuss distractors when focusing on reading and listening tasks in class. Distractors test student understanding of the detail of the text, and need to be identified before being eliminated.
