Key learning points

  1. The prepositions 'durch, für, gegen, um' are used with the accusative. 'Aus, bei, mit, nach, von, zu' use the dative.
  2. 'An, auf, in, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen' use the accusative for movement or the dative for no movement.
  3. Knowing the prepositions and their cases ensures that the correct form of definite and indefinite articles is used.
  4. Use da-compounds for inanimate nouns already mentioned, including with verbs taking prepositions.
  5. Use accusative or dative pronouns for animate nouns.

Keywords

  • Definite article - word for 'the' which may change according to gender, number and case

  • Indefinite article - the words 'ein', 'eine', 'ein', meaning 'a/an', which may change according to gender, number and case

  • Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun, connecting it to another word

  • Da-, dar- - prefix added to prepositions to avoid repetition of the noun

Common misconception

All prepositions are followed by only one case - for example, the accusative or the dative.

The prepositions 'an, 'auf', 'in', ‘über’, 'unter', ‘vor’, 'hinter', 'neben' and ‘zwischen’ are used with the accusative case when there is movement, but the dative case when there is no movement.

The dual case prepositions ('zwischen, über, unter, hinter, vor, neben') are required knowledge for Higher only. However, they are on the AQA Foundation tier list, whilst ‘vor’, 'an' and 'auf' are on the Edexcel Foundation list.
