Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The vowels [a], [o] and [e] can be pronounced long as in 'gezogen' or short as in 'gewonnen'.
      2. Strong verbs form past participles by adding 'ge-' and '-en' around the verb stem, e.g. 'gelesen'. Others are irregular.
      3. To form a closed question in the perfect tense, swap the position of 'haben' or 'sein' with the subject.
      4. For open questions in the perfect tense, place a question word before 'haben' or 'sein'; the subject follows.
      5. The past participles 'gefallen' and 'gemocht' both mean 'liked'. Use indirect object pronouns with 'gefallen'.

      Keywords

      • Past participle - verb form that forms the perfect tense, together with the auxiliary verb

      • Closed question - a question which can be answered with yes/no, formed by inverting the subject and verb in a sentence

      • Open question - a question starting with a wh- word, followed by word order 2

      Common misconception

Questions are formed in the same way in both German and English.

English uses 'do you ... ?' or 'are you ... ?' when forming questions. German inverts the position of the subject and verb in a statement to form a closed question. Add a question word at the start to change it into an open question.

      Teacher tip

Task A1 has two options. Option 1 is suited for Higher Tier, Option 2 for Foundation Tier.
