Key learning points

  1. Pronunciation is important for clear communication. Pay particular attention to the pronunciation of cognates.
  2. To form the future tense, use the present tense of werden to mean 'will/going to’ and an infinitive verb at the end.
  3. Use a future time phrase with the present tense to mean 'going to' or ‘-ing’, e.g., 'tomorrow I’m doing my homework'.
  4. 'Ich will' (from the verb 'wollen') means 'I want to', but is a false friend; 'ich werde' is 'I will'.

Keywords

  • Werden - auxiliary verb used with a 2nd verb in the infinitive to express the future, e.g., 'ich werde reisen'

Common misconception

'Ich will' in German means 'I will' in English.

'Ich will' (from the verb 'wollen') means 'I want to', but is a false friend. The future tense in German needs 'werden' with a 2nd verb in the infinitive.
