Technologie der Zukunft: 'du' & 'ihr' questions with reflexives, modals, future

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can ask open and closed questions in the present and future tenses, with modal and reflexive verbs, using intonation effectively to read aloud and ask questions about future technology.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. A closed question is formed by swapping the position of the verb and subject in a statement.
      2. Add a question word in front of the verb to change a closed question into an open one.
      3. In questions with reflexive verbs, only subject and verb swap position, and the reflexive pronoun follows the subject.
      4. Future or modal (2-verb) questions swap the subject and 1st verb; the infinitive remains at the end.
      5. Varied intonation and accurate pronunciation matter in speaking and reading aloud; punctuation and understanding help.

      Keywords

      • Closed question - a question which can be answered with 'yes' or no'

      • Open question - a question which starts with a question word such as ‘Wo?’ and seeks information

      • Intonation - the rise and fall of the voice when speaking

      • Reflexive - describes an action where the subject and object of the verb are the same

      • Modal verb - verb of necessity or possibility used with a 2nd verb in infinitive, e.g., 'must', 'can', 'want'

      Common misconception

Closed questions in German require a translation of ‘do you …’ or ‘are you …’, as in English.

Swap the position of the verb and the subject to create a closed question in German. Do not use translations of ‘do you …’ or ‘are you …’.

      Teacher tip

Pupils might find it helpful to brainstorm present tense modal verb forms ('wollen', 'können', 'dürfen', 'sollen' and 'müssen') in a short starter activity, as these are used but not explicitly taught in this lesson.
