Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The most important thing for successful reading comprehension is a secure knowledge of vocabulary.
      2. It is also very helpful to look out for synonyms and distractors when answering reading comprehension questions.
      3. When translating, 'zoom in' to translate individual words and 'zoom out' to check the meaning of the whole sentence.

      Keywords

      • Synonym - word that has the same or very similar meaning to another word

      • Distractor - incorrect but plausible answer option in reading or listening tasks, designed to test your attention to detail

      Common misconception

When translating into English from German, I only need to understand the gist of the sentences.

When translating, it's important to ensure that you have accounted for the meaning of every German word, even though you might not translate word-for-word into English.

      Teacher tip

The tasks in the second learning cycle are aimed at Foundation, Foundation/Higher (overlap question) and Higher, but all students could usefully attempt all questions. For the translation into English, Foundation and Higher versions are provided.
