Key learning points
- Adverbs follow the order time, manner, place; using TMP with all tenses can work well to describe sequences of events.
- Any adverb can start a sentence for emphasis. In this case, use word order 2 and order the remaining adverbs using TMP.
- Use a verb with ‘gern’ to mean ‘like’, ‘lieber’ to mean ‘prefer’ and ‘am liebsten’ to mean ‘most preferably of all’.
- Use the adverbs gern, lieber, am liebsten to develop and extend opinions on a range of themes.
Keywords
Time, manner, place (TMP) - the order of adverbs in a German sentence - time before manner before place, abbreviated to TMP
Gern - adverb meaning 'gladly', 'like to'
Lieber - comparative adverb meaning 'more gladly', 'rather'
Am liebsten - superlative adverb meaning 'most preferably', 'most of all'
Common misconception
Time, manner, place adverbs must always be used in the order TMP.
When using WO1, the order TMP applies. However, each of the elements can be used at the beginning of a sentence for emphasis. In that case, use WO2 and put the remaining elements in the order time before manner before place.
