Key learning points
- Adjectives can be turned into neuter nouns to express abstract concepts, e.g., ‘das Gute’ - 'the good thing'.
- To form an abstract adjectival noun, use 'das', capitalise the adjective, and add '-e' in nominative and accusative.
- Using abstract adjectival nouns can help to vary and extend opinions, e.g., ‘das Beste (daran) ist, dass ...'.
- Plural adjectival nouns end in '-en' when used after 'die'.
- Plural adjectival nouns used without articles end in 'e' in nominative and accusative and 'en' in dative.
Keywords
Adjectival noun - a type of noun that takes the same ending as adjectives
Common misconception
Plural adjectival nouns always end in '-en'.
All plural adjectival nouns preceded by 'die' and all in the dative end in '-en', but for plural adjectival nouns without articles, use '-e' in the nominative and accusative.
