Key learning points
- Some nouns such as 'Physik' do not have plurals.
- Verbs that start in 'be-', 'ent-' or 'er-' have inseparable prefixes in the perfect tense.
- 'Gehen' can be combined with other infinitives such as 'schwimmen'.
- Past participles of separable verbs are one word - prefix first then the past participle of main verb.
Keywords
Perfect tense - two-word past tense formed with the present tense of either ‘haben’ or ‘sein’ and a past participle
Past participle - verb form, often starting with 'ge-' used in the perfect tense
Separable verb - a two-part verb, with a prefix and main verb, e.g., 'einladen'
Common misconception
All past participles in German start with 'ge-'.
Verbs beginning with 'be-', 'ent-' or 'er-' do not require 'ge-' at the beginning. Past participles of separable verbs have the prefix first then the past participle of the main verb. They are written as one word, e.g., 'eingeladen', 'ausgegangen'.
