Key learning points

  1. The prefix 'da-' is added to prepositions to refer back to something already mentioned and avoid repetition of the noun.
  2. We use da-compounds for inanimate nouns. We use direct object pronouns for people and animals.
  3. We use wo-compounds to ask questions with verbs that take prepositions.
  4. 'Wo' and 'da' become 'wor' and 'dar' before prepositions starting with a vowel.
  5. The consonantal [r] makes a rolling sound at the back of the throat and the vocalic [r] has a gentle ‘ah’ sound.

Keywords

  • Consonantal [r] - pronounced with a rolling sound, as in ‘Freund’

  • Vocalic [r] - pronounced with a gentle ‘ah’ sound, as in ‘Uhr’

  • Da-/dar- - prefix added to prepositions to avoid repetition of the noun

  • Wo-/wor- - prefix added to prepositions to ask questions

Common misconception

Da-compounds can be used to refer back to any noun already mentioned.

Da-compounds can only be used with inanimate nouns. For people and animals, use object pronouns.
