Key learning points

  1. The long German [e] can be written 'e', 'eh' or ‘ee’.
  2. 'Jed-' has different endings in the nominative, accusative and dative cases.
  3. Some verbs take indirect objects. They are also called ‘dative verbs’.
  4. [eu] can be written as 'eu' like in 'neu' and 'aü' like in 'Häuser'.

Keywords

  • Jed- - determiner meaning ‘each’ or ‘every’ which changes according to gender and case

  • Dative - case used for the indirect object in a sentence and after a dative verb or preposition

Common misconception

All verbs in German are followed by the accusative case, apart from 'sein' which takes the nominative case.

A number of verbs are followed by the dative case. These must be learnt and carefully identified when translating into German.
