Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Break compound words down into two or more individual words to work out their meaning.
      2. Form questions with 'Sie' for formal 'you'. The 'Sie' form of the verb is usually the same as the infinitive.
      3. Use 'dessen' and 'deren' as relative pronouns to mean 'whose'.
      4. In a role-play, you are required to say a short phrase in response to each prompt. You will be addressed using 'Sie'.
      5. In a role-play, it is important to include at least one verb in each phrase. You must also ask one question.

      Keywords

      • Sie - subject pronoun meaning 'you', formal

      • Role-play - a task with a situation and prompts to ask and answer questions, simulating a conversation

      Common misconception

It is important to say as much as possible when carrying out any speaking task.

When completing a role-play exam task, it is important to use at least one verb for each prompt. However, this is not the time to show off extended and developed sentences; it's more important to get the message across accurately and succinctly.

      Teacher tip

As a follow-on to completing the role-play task in pairs, students might enjoy creating their own role-play prompts within the context of the lesson, e.g., asking for directions or buying something in a shop. Higher candidates could also add a bullet point requiring the past tense.
