Key learning points
- There are 16 Bundesländer (states) in Germany, 9 in Austria and 26 Kantone (states) in Switzerland.
- Possessive adjectives are used with nouns to show ownership or belonging. They must agree with the noun which follows.
- To translate 'its', use 'sein' with masculine or neuter nouns, and 'ihr' with feminine nouns.
- Modal verbs express ideas of necessity or possibility. Use them with a 2nd verb in the infinitive at the sentence's end.
- Apply the two-verb rule if there are two verbs in a sentence. The second verb goes to the end.
Keywords
Possessive adjective - a word that goes before a noun to show ownership or belonging and matches the noun in gender, case and number
Sein - possessive adjective meaning 'his' or 'its'
Ihr - possessive adjective meaning 'her', 'their' or 'its'
Modal verb - verb of necessity or possibility (must, can, want) used with a 2nd verb in the infinitive, which goes to the end of the sentence
Two-verb rule - position of the 2nd verb at the end of two-verb sentences
Common misconception
A possessive adjective must match whoever possesses the noun in gender, number and case.
A possessive adjective matches the gender, number and case of the noun it describes, not the person possessing it, e.g., 'his school' - 'seine Schule'. The possessor is male but the noun they possess is feminine.
