Key learning points
- Cognates are words that have the same meaning and look the same or very similar to English words.
- Break compound words down into two or more individual words to work out their meaning.
- Use previous knowledge and contextual clues from a text to help you work out the meanings of unfamiliar words.
- In a role-play, you respond to each prompt with a short phrase. You will be addressed using the 'Sie' form of the verb.
- In a role-play, you will need to ask at least one question.
Keywords
Cognate - word with the same meaning and same or very similar spelling in English and German
Common misconception
If I don't have a dictionary in an exam, I won't be able to work out the meaning of unfamiliar words.
If you cannot use a dictionary, look at the surrounding words. Is the word part of a compound noun? Is it a cognate? Using the words and grammar you know, generate a working translation and try to fill the gap. Consider the topic of the text, too.
