Drei starke Frauen: subject pronouns, relative clauses, historic present

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can understand relative clauses and the historic present in an extended text.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Relative clauses add information about the noun in a main clause, without starting another sentence.
      2. Some relative clauses are embedded in a main clause.
      3. Match subject pronouns 'er', 'sie', 'es', 'sie' with the gender and number of a noun to mean 'it' and 'they'.
      4. The historic present narrates events in the past to make them feel more immediate.

      Keywords

      • Subject pronoun - represents the person, people or thing(s) doing the verb, e.g., 'I', 'we', 'they'

      • Relative clause - adds information about the noun in the main clause

      • Historic present - narrates events in the past using the present tense

      Common misconception

Like English, German uses 'it' and 'they' as subject pronouns to replace nouns.

In German, subject pronouns 'er', 'sie', 'es', 'sie' mean 'it' and 'they' and match the grammatical gender and number of the noun.

      Teacher tip

If time allows, a wider discussion of women and their role in science would be stimulating and enriching. Starter quiz question 2 contains only higher vocabulary.
