Add and subtract one from any number

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can add and subtract one from any number.

      Key learning points

      1. Adding one gives one more.
      2. Subtracting one gives one less.

      Keywords

      • One more - The number after a given number is one more than it.

      • One less - The number before a given number is one less than it

      Common misconception

Children may struggle to count on from, or back from, a given number.

Encourage automaticity with the counting sequence through regular practice. At times, pause so that children need to predict the number that is one more/less. Initially, you may need to model silently counting from one through to the given number.

      Teacher tip

Reinforce the ideas of one more and one less within counting rhymes or highlight during daily tasks within the classroom.
