Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. If starting with and adding/subtracting the same amount, the number at the end of the story will be the same.
  2. When more are added, the number at the start increases.
  3. The more that are added, the greater the number at the end of the story will be.
  4. When some are subtracted, the number at the start decreases.
  5. The more that are subtracted, the smaller the amount at the end will be.

Keywords

  • Add - To find the total, or sum, by combining two or more parts (addends), or to increase an amount by adding another.

  • Increase - To make something greater/larger in size or quantity.

  • Subtract - To partition one part from another (the subtrahend from the difference), or to decrease an amount by taking an amount away.

  • Decrease - To make something smaller in size or quantity.

Common misconception

Some children may not relate the size of the number added/subtracted to the number at the end of the story.

Encourage children to predict how the number at the end of the story will change when the number added/subtracted is increased or decreased.

Draw attention to the relationship between the change in the 'then' part of the story and the number at the end of the story. Encourage children to make generalisations about the effects of adding and subtracting larger and smaller quantities.
