Use knowledge of divisibility rules when the divisor is 2 to solve problems

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use knowledge of divisibility rules when the divisor is 2 to solve problems.

      Key learning points

      1. All numbers in the two times table are even.
      2. All numbers in the two times table are divisible by 2
      3. If a number is even, it is in the two times table and is divisible by 2
      4. If a number is odd, it is not divisible by 2 because when divided by 2, it does not give two whole numbers.

      Keywords

      • Divisible - When a number can be divided into equal parts without any left over, we can say that it is divisible by ___

      • Even - Any number that can be divided exactly by 2 is an even number. The last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8

      Common misconception

Children may not see 2-digit numbers as divisible by 2 if they are not in their 2 times tables.

Encourage children to apply the knowledge that a number is divisible by 2 when it is even. The distinction between even and odd numbers can be revisited prior to the lesson and displayed to reference within the lesson.

      Teacher tip

Any number can be divided by 2, but here we are looking at whether it can be divided into whole numbers or not. We can say, 'If a number is odd, it is not divisible by 2 because when divided by 2, it does not give two whole numbers.'
