Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. To find one-half of a number you split it into 2 equal parts
  2. One-half of a number can be written as an equation using fraction notation.

Keywords

  • One-half - One of two equal parts of a whole.

Common misconception

Children may try to make a group of 2 objects rather than share into 2 equal parts.

Use the stem sentence 'the whole group of _ has been divided into 2 equal parts and there are _ in each part' alongside concrete objects so that the children can experience dividing different numbers of objects into 2 equal parts.

Each time an image of a sharing context is shown in the lesson, take the opportunity to model or allow the children to explore this practically with their own set of objects, rather than simply showing the images to the children.
