Solve a variety of division problems, explaining understanding

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can solve a variety of division problems and explain my understanding.

      Key learning points

      1. It is important to identify the whole in a division problem.
      2. Skip counting in equal steps can solve a sharing or grouping problem.
      3. In a grouping problem, the whole is divided by the size of each group.
      4. In a sharing problem, the whole is divided by the number of groups.

      Keywords

      • Equal - Equal means having exactly the same amount or value.

      • Group - A group is a collection of objects or images.

      • Share - Share means to split into parts.

      Common misconception

Pupils may struggle to identify grouping and sharing structures.

Model the problem visually, using manipulatives such as cubes, counters and numbers lines. Alongside this, present these problems as division equations, discussing with the pupils what each number means.

      Teacher tip

Pupils may need to revisit counters or cubes before moving onto counting using a number line. Some pupils may make connections between division and multiplication, particularly when answering the missing number pupils in cycle B of the lesson.
