      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can follow and give directions using the language of position and direction.

      Key learning points

      1. A toy or person can be directed using the language of position and direction
      2. Turns to the right and left can be used to give directions

      Keywords

      • Directions - A set of instructions to tell someone which way to go.

      Common misconception

Children may describe movements around a grid using left, right, up and down rather than using the language of turn e.g. go forward, turn left.

Encourage children to act out their directions practically so they can feel themselves turning and see that they are making a turn and not taking sideways steps across the path or grid.

      Teacher tip

Look for opportunities to follow and give directions that involve left and right turns as part of the daily routine. Play games and set challenges that involve following and giving directions such as hiding 'treasure' that the children have to follow directions in order to find.
