Explain the relationship between adjacent multiples of 5

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain the relationship between adjacent multiples of 5

      Key learning points

      1. Adjacent multiples of 5 have a difference of 5
      2. If you add 5 to a multiple of 5 you get the next multiple of 5
      3. If you subtract 5 from a multiple of 5 you get the previous multiple of 5

      Keywords

      • Previous - Occurring before in time or order.

      • Next - Occurring after in time or order.

      • Multiple - A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number.

      Common misconception

Pupils may not understand the keyword adjacent and have difficulty understanding the word problems.

Model correct usage in a range of contexts including labelling abstract equations and using the term to identify the known elements in worded problems. Take time to show adjacent on number lines connecting to addition and subtraction of equal groups.

      Teacher tip

Provide pupils with plenty of practice of the five times tables over an extended period of time until children are fluent in the isolated multiplication facts. At this stage, they can recite the five times table up to the required number of fives in order to find the answers.
