Common misconception
Pupils may not understand the keyword adjacent and have difficulty understanding the word problems.
Model correct usage in a range of contexts including labelling abstract equations and using the term to identify the known elements in worded problems. Take time to show adjacent on number lines connecting to addition and subtraction of equal groups.
