Compare and sequence intervals of time

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can compare and sequence intervals of time.

      Key learning points

      1. Intervals of time can be compared using greater than, equal to and less than.
      2. They can also be ordered from longest to shortest or shortest to longest.

      Keywords

      • Interval - An interval is the space between two values or points. In this lesson, the time between nine o'clock and quarter past nine for example.

      • Shortest - The least height, length or distance.

      • Longest - The greatest height, length or distance.

      Common misconception

Pupils may struggle to compare two time intervals when they are presented in different formats, such as five minutes to a quarter of an hour.

The lesson encourages converting time into minutes. Develop automaticity in recalling facts such as 15 minutes = quarter of an hour, 30 minutes = half an hour, 45 minutes = three quarters of an hour and 60 minutes = one hour.

      Teacher tip

There are additional materials to support the delivery of this lesson, however, please consider creating a larger-scale version, with hoops and larger time interval cards.
