      Recall common fraction-decimal equivalents

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can recall common fraction - decimal equivalents.

      Key learning points

      1. 0.1 is equal to 1/10
      2. 0.2 is equal to 1/5
      3. 0.25 is equal to 1/4
      4. 0.5 is equal to 1/2
      5. 0.75 is equal to 3/4

      Keywords

      • Equivalent - Numbers are equivalent if they have exactly the same value.

      Common misconception

Knowing and understanding that one-fifth as a fraction is equivalent to 0.2 as a decimal and that counting in steps of 0.2 is the same as counting in fifths.

Make sure that pupils have the opportunity to rehearse the fact that one-fifth is equivalent to 0.2 more frequently during the lesson and at other times when looking at fractions and decimals.

      Teacher tip

It is important that pupils know how to convert fractions into decimals so that they can use a strategy if they forget the fact. Once they know the facts, provide plenty of opportunities for them to recall them both as facts and in the context of ordering and comparing values and amounts/
