Lesson details
Key learning points
- If the multiplicative relationship between the numerator and denominator is the same, the fractions will be equivalent.
- In equivalent fractions the numerators will share a common factor and the denominators will share a common factor.
- In equivalent fractions, the numerators and denominators have been scaled up or down by the same factor.
Keywords
Equivalent fraction - Equivalent fractions are fractions which have the same value, even though they may look different. They describe the same part or proportion of the whole
Simplify - To simplify a fraction is to identify the highest common factor shared by the numerator and denominator and to scale down both by that factor.
Scale up/down - To scale up or down is to multiply or divide by a given number or factor.
Common misconception
Some pupils may still think that, because equivalent fractions look different, they do not have the same value.
Use representations such as bar models and shapes as well as number lines to ensure that this understanding is secured both in interpreting fractions as parts of a whole and as numbers with a fixed position on a number line.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
