Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. 5 miles is roughly equivalent to 8km
  2. Conversion graphs can be used to convert from one unit to another.

Keywords

  • Kilometre - A kilometre is a metric measure of distance, equal to 1,000 metres. It can be abbreviated to km.

  • Mile - A mile is an imperial measure of distance.

  • Approximate - If a value is not exact, but is close enough to be used, it is approximate.

  • Pound - The currency used in the United Kingdom is pounds sterling.

  • Euro - The currency used in most European countries is the Euro.

Common misconception

Lots of practice has taken place for pupils to convert between kilometres and metres. Pupils may expect kilometres and miles to have a similar relationship and expect one mile to equal 1,000 metres.

Bar models and double number lines are excellent visual representations of the relationship and should help pupils to form a more concrete understanding of the equivalence between units. Displaying these will provide a prompt for pupils.

A good way to either pre-teach the conversion between miles and kilometres is using two-coloured counters: write 5 miles on one side and 8 km on the other. Then take a handful. What is the value in kilometres? What is the value in miles?
