Convert to and from fraction and decimal quantities of larger units

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can convert to and from fraction and decimal quantities of larger units.

      Key learning points

      1. 1 mm = 0.001km
      2. 1 g = 0.001 kg
      3. 1 ml = 0.001 l
      4. 1 m = 0.001 km

      Keywords

      • Equivalent - If two or more things have the same value, they are equivalent.

      • Convert - Convert means to change a value or expression from one form to another.

      Common misconception

Pupils see values like 0.25 l and convert it to 25 ml.

The lesson presents fractions and decimals as parts of whole circles. As long as pupils know that 1 l = 1,000 ml, they should see from the representation that 0.25 l = 250 ml as 250 + 250 + 250 + 250 = 1,000

      Teacher tip

This lesson focuses on the larger unit being less than 1 Spend time revisiting fraction and decimal equivalents in this way so that the representations within this lesson are familiar and accessible to children. The next lesson will cover examples where the larger unit is greater than 1
